Wellbeing is our sense of security, optimism, resilience and purpose. It shapes how we think, feel and react, and it’s just as important as nutrition, exercise and sleep for our all-round health.
Take 5
We can take five simple steps to build our wellbeing; they remind us to enjoy the people and world around us:
Where to start?
We are all different, so take some time to think about what makes you feel well. Watch this video from The Royal Melbourne Hospital for inspiration:

Time to connect: Join your colleagues this month as we celebrate being Fit for work + Fit for life.
Fit for work + Fit for life is about looking after ourselves and looking out for others.
We’re celebrating R U OK? Day in Australia on 12 September, and the United Nations’ World Mental Health Day on 10 October. Get together with your team and plan an event, maybe a morning tea or a fun group activity, to promote physical and mental health and wellbeing at any time over the month.
Thiess’ Health & Safety Advisor Matthew Berlingeri is committed to starting life-changing conversations this R U OK? Day. “To me R U OK? Day serves as a friendly reminder to reach out to your friends and family – ask how they are, and then really listen and engage in what they have to say. The day is also a reminder to check in with yourself and reflect.”
At our CIMIC, Pacific Partnerships and EIC Activities offices in Sydney, our teams are being offered training on mental wellbeing and how to recognise the signs when someone is not OK. We need to look after our family, mates and colleagues. All it takes is a few simple words to start a conversation.
At Pacific Partnerships, we're committing to ask “R U OK?” whenever we notice a change, no matter how small in a colleague's behaviour. Asking “R U OK?” shows we care and that we are available to talk about life’s ups and downs.
To get ready for R U OK? Day on 12 September, EIC Activities’ Bridges team Phoebe Tay, Ashley Ward and Gerry Vassi have pledged to check-in with their teammates every day. R U OK? Day aims to inspire meaningful connections and communication in the workplace. EIC Activities will be hosting events in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane on the day to discuss the importance of checking-in with your teammates.
"There is help out there but letting people know you are experiencing a problem or issue is the first step. If people do not know you are going through something they can't help. Dolly Everett said it perfectly ‘speak even if your voice shakes’ such a powerful statement and so true.” Angelina Carbone, UGL Training Administrator Resources.
“Mental health is a topic that affects many people in and outside of the workplace; unfortunately, due to the associated negative stigma, we often don’t speak about issues affecting us. I hope through campaigns such as R U OK? Day we start to have open conversations relating to our mental health, which I believe is just as important as our physical health.” Semhar Lemma, CPB Contractors Indigenous & Social Inclusion Advisor.
“We will be celebrating the day with our employees. R U OK? Day is a reminder that we should check-in on each other regularly. We want to ensure all our people feel supported, looked after and that they can have a chat to us whenever they want.” Sedgman’s Mental Health Working Group is currently working on a long-term Mental Health Strategy, which will deliver initiatives, resources and tools to support the mental health and wellbeing of our people.

AIA Vitality – Improve your wellbeing, enjoy the rewards or donate to charity
In Australia, our dedicated AIA Vitality health and wellbeing program rewards members for making healthy choices like completing a health check or nutrition assessment, or setting and following through on a physical activity target.
AIA Vitality membership is a great way to build your wellbeing and for teams to connect. Since its launch in May 2018, several thousand of our employees have made their health and wellbeing a priority through the program, getting healthier and enjoying a range of benefits or directing their benefits to charity partners, Black Dog, Cancer Council Australia or Diabetes Australia. Charity donations by employees are 40% higher than the start of the year.
We have helped our people improve their ‘Vitality Age’ based on health risk factors. The gap between Vitality Age and actual age for the CIMIC Group is 50% lower than 9 months ago.
