On the M1 Pacific Motorway widening project between Tuggerah and Doyalson in New South Wales, CPB Contractors is using a new construction methodology to demolish, recycle and reuse concrete pavement.
Traditionally, to repurpose concrete pavement it must be demolished using an excavator and breaker, then transported to a processing facility to be crushed and screened to make a recycled product. The completed product is then trucked back to the site.
Our CPB Contractors people saw that safety and efficiency challenges, as well as potential community issues, could be avoided with an updated approach, using two pieces of specialised equipment.
Use of the Mobile Impact Crusher eliminated the need for 334 truck trips to travel to and from the processing facility. This minimised our project’s impact on traffic, carbon emissions and noise levels on the local community, while also improving safety and operational performance.
Another piece of specialist equipment used was the rubbliser machine which works at a faster pace (200m/hr) than traditional concrete demolition methods, such as excavators and hammers. The rubbilised product, produced by the rubbliser, provides consistent feed material for crushing into a select material, making the crushing operation more efficient.
This machine is also quieter than traditional excavators. Noise and vibration monitoring showed that the rubbliser was operating at 117 decibels (dB) while multiple excavators operate between 122 and 127 decibels (dB).
