How’s your super? Early last month Sedgman hosted a superannuation education session. Participants discovered that there is a superannuation gender gap, with most women retiring with less superannuation than men. The session highlighted what everyone can do to make the most of their superannuation and close the gap. Cynthia Wallace, Graduate Structural Engineer was one of our people who attended the session.
CPB Contractors Sustainability team was in the spotlight at the prestigious Annual Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) Awards, receiving three awards. The Awards celebrate leaders in infrastructure sustainability. Winners were announced at the ISCA Gala Dinner held in Melbourne on 17 October 2019. The awards recognise CPB Contractor’s dedication to constant improvement in sustainability, performance and innovation.
Leighton Asia’s team joined the launch ceremony of the Hong Kong Government’s ‘Life Buddies Mentoring Scheme’ for the coming school year. This school-based mentoring program aims to provide students with early workplace exposure, allowing them to develop a vision for the future through the guidance of experienced mentors. Some keen Sedgman readers delve into the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) book swap in the Perth office. Sedgman proudly supports the ILF, a charity that aims to reduce disadvantage in remote Indigenous communities across Australia by lifting literacy levels. Sedgman has two book swaps set up in the Perth and Brisbane offices where staff can donate old books, take a book home and donate a gold coin to the foundation. Well done to the team for all their contributions so far this year!
UGL’s Samantha Johnson, Change Manager Utilities Division, facilitated the Cross River Rail CBGU (CPB, Bam, Ghella and UGL) Joint Venture Engineering Leadership Team in a recent workshop in Brisbane, Queensland. Employees from UGL and CPB Contractors joined together for a day focused on developing them as a leadership team for this iconic Brisbane project.
Leighton Asia’s Digital Engineering leads, Scott Semple and Francesco Tizzani, both BIM Managers, visited our office in Jakarta, Indonesia delivering a workshop on digital transformation. After sharing the digital engineering best practices across Leighton Asia’s projects, the workshop collected feedback from the local team identifying training opportunities and providing input into developing a strategic plan to enhance business efficiency, safety and quality.

The national STEM learning program promotes female role models in the industry, encouraging equal participation of boys and girls in STEM related study and professions.
100 years ago, in October 1919 the UGL Broadmeadow site was purchased by Goninan. Over the next century, Goninan evolved into what we know as UGL today. The site was previously a copper smelter owned by the English and Australian Copper Company (pictured).

UGL and Naval Ship Management (NSM) have been recognised at the 2019 Defence Connect Industry Awards, receiving ‘Naval Business of the Year’ in a competitive field. NSM is a joint venture between UGL and Babcock Pty Ltd. This award recognises the achievements of the Joint Venture over the past five years, and highlights its position as one of Australia’s top defence industry businesses. We may be well and truly into spring in Australia, but in late September Woodlawn minerals processing plant in New South Wales turned into a winter wonderland. Our Sedgman team has been adapting to the cool weather on site over the past two years, and were finally rewarded with snow.
Vikesh Magan, Thiess Operations Manager enjoys a walk up Castle Hill with students from Clontarf Foundation academies in Townsville, Queensland. The activity is part of the annual employment forum program, with events held across Australia aiming to build relationships between partner organisations and students, encouraging discussions about career pathways.
Congratulations to our CPB Contractors team delivering the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project. Our team of tunnellers and construction experts, together with our joint venture partners, have achieved a significant milestone with Sydney’s new twin metro railway tunnels now 70 per cent complete. Tunnel Boring Machine ‘Nancy’ has arrived at the new Martin Place Station, 28 metres under Sydney, having travelled from Waterloo in just 11 months.
In late September members from the Sedgman and Thiess teams in Centurion celebrated Heritage Day, a national day in South Africa. As a nation with eleven official languages and many more cultural backgrounds and beliefs, the day is all about celebrating the unique diversity of South Africa through sharing cultural stories, food, performances, music and dance. Our Sedgman and Thiess teams showcased some of the various cultures in South Africa through a Zulu cultural dance and a Venda cultural greeting.
