Some of the UGL team on the shutdown project.

UGL has raised A$6,200 for Project We Care in Gladstone, Central Queensland. Project We Care, an initiative by the Gladstone Port Curtis Rotary Club, provides suicide intervention training and support in the Gladstone region.

UGL performed four shutdowns at the Yarwun Alumina greenfield refinery between July and September 2019.

This year, UGL introduced ‘Safe Day,’ a safety incentive program, with UGL contributing A$100 for every safe day throughout the scheduled shutdown.

A day without any recordable injury or significant safety event is deemed a safe day. With almost 200,000 labour hours over 62 days, all days were considered safe, raising A$6,200 for Project We Care.

Daily prestart meetings update on the ‘Safe Day’ progress.

Project We Care provides suicide intervention training for approximately 1,200 people each year in high schools and other organisations within Gladstone. The charity resonates with the workforce as Australian fly-in-fly-out construction and maintenance workers are statistically at a higher risk of suicide. The donation will cover Project We Care’s operating costs for an entire year.

To engage the team with the safety initiative, it was covered in the induction program and the team was given daily progress updates during prestart meetings.

The team at UGL is looking forward to more safe days, and support for Project We Care.

Give it a thumbs up
