HMAS Adelaide transits the East Coast of Australia for Operation Bushfire Assist tasking.

Naval Ship Management Australia (NSM), UGL’s incorporated Joint Venture with Babcock Australia, are engaged in a long-term strategic partnership with the Australian Government’s Department of Defence, as the Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) Asset Class Prime Contractor. NSM are responsible for the maintenance and sustainment of two Royal Australian Navy Canberra Class LHD’s – the centrepiece of Australia’s humanitarian and disaster response capability.

The Canberra Class LHD’s provide the Australian Defence Force with one of the most capable and sophisticated air-land-sea amphibious deployment systems in the world. The 27,000 tonne ships can land a force of over 1,000 personnel by helicopter and watercraft.

In early January the Australian government announced the short notice deployment of LHD 01 – HMAS Adelaide in response to the bushfire crisis that plagued parts of Eastern and Southern Australia. The vessel provided crucial command and control, evacuation, medical treatment, emergency accommodation and aviation services.

The short notice availability of this strategic naval asset was in no small part due to the expertise and diligence of NSM and their extensive subcontractor supply chain.

UGL is extremely proud to contribute to the delivery of these critical support services, which have enabled Australia’s Navy to come to the aid of their fellow Australians during a time of national crisis.
