In December 2019, a major bushfire in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales threatened the Digital Trains Radio System (DTRS) sites west of Mt Victoria railway station. The DTRS is the communication system that Sydney Trains operators rely on for safe operation on the network. UGL ensures this system is maintained and online.

To ensure everyone’s safety during the fires, a decision between Sydney Trains and UGL was made to shut down the DTRS sites within the bushfire area.

Once the fire had passed and the area was safe to enter, under strict safety procedures, Sydney Trains and UGL commenced damage assessment and recovery of assets in the affected area.

In January, UGL’s Through Life Support (TLS) team commenced inspecting each DTRS site to assess the fire damage and provided regular updates to the Sydney Trains team.

The damage was mostly sustained on the power and fibre connections to the sites. UGL is working with the utility providers and Sydney Trains to coordinate the repair work which is well underway.

The response of the team has gone well beyond the realms of normal operational requirements and the way that they have worked closely with Sydney Trains is testament to the passion and professionalism of the UGL TLS team.

The collaborative effort from both teams resulted in a safe and prompt recovery of the Blue Mountains DTRS Network.
